Course Synopsis :
Oxford College ODL offer this full A Level course in Chemistry. On completion of your two part course you will :

Learn about structure and bonding, organic chemistry, atomic structure, and kinetics

Study the various families of elements and formulae of chemicals in a real-world context

Gain a better understanding of laboratory procedures and how to safely carry them out

Recognise the value of chemistry to society and how it may be used responsibly


Chemistry has an impact on many areas of our everyday lives - from developing new medicines and consumer goods to how we use natural resources. This course will give you support for practical work, detailed guidance through the specification, a review of the required scientific and mathematical skills.

Unit 1: Structure, bonding and main group chemistry
Atomic structure
Formulae, equations and moles
Structure and bonding
Periodic Table I
Introduction to oxidation and reduction
Group 1 (lithium to caesium) and Group 2 (beryllium to barium)
Group 7 (chlorine to iodine)

Unit 2: Introductory organic chemistry, energetics, kinetics and equilibrium and its applications
Energetics I
Organic chemistry I (introduction, alkanes, alkenes, halogenoalkanes and alcohols)
Kinetics I
Chemical equilibria I
Industrial inorganic chemistry

Unit 3: Laboratory chemistry I
1A. Assessment of experimental skills
1B. Laboratory chemistry

Unit 4: Periodicity, quantitative equilibria and functional group chemistry
Energetics II
Periodic Table II (Period 3 and Group 4)
Chemical equilibria II
Acid-base equilibria
Organic chemistry II (acids, esters, carbonyl compounds, acid chlorides, nitrogen compounds and further halogeno compounds)

Basic English reading and writing skills, as full tutor support is given.

Qualification :
AS/A2 - A level in Chemistry (Edexcel). Both AS and A2 level courses and examinations must be successfully completed to gain a full A level.
