Course Synopsis:

Oxford College ODL offer this full A Level course in Government and Politics. On completion of your two part course you will be able to:

Learn about political theories, values and decision-making processes that guide modern governments

Develop the ability to interpret evidence from different sources and reach appropriate conclusions

Consider the strengths and limitations of various political systems and how they might be improved

Gain an understanding the political process and discover its significance in the modern world

Why are political participation and democracy important?
Do elections guarantee democracy?
What is the role of political parties?
How important are pressure groups?

Unit 2: Governing the UK
What is the nature of the UK constitution?
What is the role and significance of Parliament?
Who has power within the executive?
Do judges deliver justice and defend freedom?

Unit 3: The changing UK system
Do elections change anything?
Is there a need for constitutional reform?
How united is the UK?
Is the EU a threat to UK sovereignty?

Unit 4: The UK Political system
The economy
The welfare state
Law and order
Race and ethnicity
Northern Ireland

Unit 5: The EU and European issues
European co-operation and the UK
Political systems of the EU

Basic English reading and writing skills, as full tutor support is given.

Variable by student commitment

Qualification :
AS/A2 - A level in Government and Politics (Edexcel). Both AS and A2 level courses and examinations must be successfully completed to gain a full A level.
