Course summary
This course is designed for anyone who wants to extend their appreciation of the visual arts. The aim of the course is to develop a wider understanding of the development of Western European art through an examination of the work of individual artists, and of the social, cultural and political context in which they worked. The course is concerned mainly with the period 1790 - 1960. Students are provided with comprehensive learning materials, and are able to access links to the online collections of major museums and galleries worldwide to complement their studies. They undertake a series of tutor-led practical assignments and are asked to compile a visual diary of photographs, sketches and notes.
