Course summary
This is a practical project based course which introduces students to the fundamental principles of fashion design. The course work involves drawing and although figure templates are provided, some previous drawing experience is an advantage. Complete beginners, or those who have not done any drawing for some time, might prefer to take a unit such as “How to Draw” first, in order to establish basic drawing skills and build confidence.

Introduction to Fashion Design consists of one unit. This unit is made up of three stages: Looking and Recording, Development and Outcome.
Students work to a given brief, and are encouraged to develop conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills. The course includes the following:
• Introduction to fashion trends and predictions.
• A simple approach to market research.
• Researching fabrics and trims.
• Creating a mood board.
• Drawing for fashion on the figure using a range of techniques and media.
• Creating original fashion design ideas.
• Developing, evaluating and selecting design ideas.
• Producing specification drawings.
This course is suitable for those who have creative flair and an interest in Fashion, as well as a desire to produce original work and make a personal statement. On completion of this course, students may wish to progress to “Designing for Fashion”.

The course involves approximately 150 hours of study.
