Fashion Design and Illustration

Course summary
This course takes students through the process of designing for fashion. The course work focuses on drawing; initially in designing on the figure for fashion, progressing to drawing to gather ideas and inspiration and finally, developing fashion design drawing skills through use of a range of media and techniques.

Some previous drawing experience is an advantage. Students who are new to fashion design might consider enrolling on “Introduction to Fashion Design”, or an introductory drawing unit, such as “How to Draw”, in order to establish basic drawing skills and build confidence.

Designing for Fashion is a practical project based course which consists of two units. Each unit is made up of three stages: Looking and Recording, Development and Outcome. Students work to given briefs and are encouraged to develop conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills. Briefs become more demanding as the units progress. The course includes the following:
• Working to fashion trends and predictions.
• Working for a suggested outlet or a given client.
• Producing focused market research.
• Researching colour trends
• Researching fabrics and trims.
• Creating mood boards.
• Compiling original visual research in the form of drawings, mark making, sketchbook work and  photgraphy.
• Drawing for fashion on the figure using a range of techniques and media.
• Creating original fashion design ideas.
• Developing design ideas, evaluating and selecting.
• Producing final design ideas and specification drawings.
This course is suitable for those who have creative flair and an interest in Fashion, as well as a desire to produce original work and make a personal statement.
