Diploma in English Literature

Course Synopsis :
This course offers a perspective on prose, drama and poetry.
The course considers a varied range of styles of writing throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

The course is appropriate for the adult learner with an interest in literature, or for the younger student who wants to prepare for GCSE O Level Higher Tier, or expand their reading and writing skills in preparation for A Level study.

No previous knowledge is required but an interest in reading is essential. The set tasks are to reinforce your reading and to provide a solid understanding of the texts.

Course Content :
The short story
– commencing with the history of the short story and with a focus on two short stories. The first story is written by Charles Dickens and offers the reader an insight into his writing skills. The second story is written by Arnold Bennett, a 19th century fiction writer.
The novel – Frankenstein – the student will learn about the features of the Gothic novel, and section by section work through the story of Frankenstein considering the story from different points of view.

Poetry – commencing with poetic technique and how to analyse and understand a poem. Commencing with two sonnets by William Shakespeare, then moving onto the 18th century, and l9th century war poetry, and finally ending with modern poetry from other cultures.

Drama – the student will read and analyse the play Hobson’s Choice, this play is humorous but at the same time as poking fun at various characters and situations it considers social issues in the early twentieth century.

Entry Requirements :
Basic English reading and writing skills, as full tutor support is given.
